Based on above, three weeks, longer than four weeks, and 'really off-season' are negotiable. While July/August is the most popular vacation time, September/October is cooler and very beautiful. Cruise ships tend to visit Bar Harbor in September/October. Accommodation DetailsChiltern Cottage, built as a guest house, is 1/2 living quarters and 1/2 indoor endless pool (swim against a current) and spa. The view of the mountains of Acadia National Park is spectacular. The surrounding woods (in a 15 acre property) offer their own hiking trails. The indoor pool is heated. A large library complements the TV facilities. The deck, really a patio, is ideal for cookouts and other outdoor meals. Of the 3 bathrooms, all have a shower, one also has a tub useful for small babies. Most tenants prefer to use the heated pool, the most popular feature of an elegantly appointed guesthouse. The cottage has a living/dining room, TV room, swimming pool room, 3 bedrooms, 3 baths, and sleeps 6. The cottage has heat, a fireplace, deck, balcony, phone, washer/dryer, satellite TV, VCR, radio, and video games. The fully-equipped kitchen has a coffee maker, microwave, dishwasher, dishes, and pots and pans. Linens and towels are provided. The cottage is surrounded by a well-kept garden and there is a large parking lot. The property has a tennis court, barbecue grill, and picnic table. Pets and smoking are not allowed. The cottage is partially handicapped accessible. SurroundingsThe cottage is secluded and quiet, and the property is wooded and mountainous. Nearby water recreation includes boating, swimming, fishing, and water skiing. Other nearby recreation includes golf, tennis, hiking, bicycling, and cross-country skiing. Chiltern Cottage, on Mount Desert Island, is just 5 miles from Acadia National Park. The Park has climbing and bicycle trails, lakes, carriage roads, and excursions. Mt. Desert, with beautiful Somes Sound, features some of the best sailing and boating on the east coast. 3 million visitors annually come for sightseeing and hiking. Chiltern Cottage is a mile from one swimming lake, and 2 miles from another. There is a nearby picnic area on the ocean. In winter, cross-country skiing on the carriage roads is popular. On a typical day, vacationers will climb Pemetic or Acadia Mountain, and have tea at the famous Jordan Pond House. Or climb Penobscot Mountain or Champlain Mountain. They might go out on the ferry for lunch on the pier on Islesford. Or walk along Otter Cliffs or the seawall. Or charter a sailboat out of Southwest Harbor. In the evening, they might dine at the elegant "Havana" restaurant in Bar Harbor, or "Red Sky" in Southwest Harbor. Chiltern Cottage is 7 miles from Storied Bar Harbor, once the summer playground of the very rich. It is 2 miles from Somesville, one of the most photographed villages on the Maine Coast. Southwest Harbor, 4 miles away, is a picturesque old-time fishing village. Bass Harbor, another nearby fishing village is also a boat building center.
